Chapter Twelve

Christmas ended up being magical. Coincidentally, both Nancy’s dad and John’s had made it home on leave during the holidays; John’s before Christmas, and Nancy’s a few days afterward. John’s mom and Nancy’s had instantly clicked as friends, which didn’t really surprise John. In fact, Mom had talked Mrs. Caldwell into testing a dance routine for physical therapy because of the pain in her upper thigh and hip, and apparently, it was helping her immensely.

The next five months went by in a blur, and before John knew it, it was time for prom, and then graduation. He and Nancy had been a couple during the remainder of the school year, and even though he was going to miss his family, the most difficult thing he was going to have to do was say goodbye to Nancy.

“Something tells me that when I leave here for boot camp, I’m going to be missing you a hell of a lot,” Nancy muttered, echoing his thoughts and looking glum.

“I was just thinking that too,” John answered, trying to avoid staring too hard at her in the bikini she was wearing as they laid beside each other on the Dragonfly Pointe Beach.

It was mid-May and they were having an unusual bout of warm weather, so they’d taken Ashley and Beth to the beach to get a little sun. It was off season, so there weren’t many tourists at the Dragonfly Pointe Inn, and the beach was nearly deserted.

John sat up, watching the girls as they played in the sand near the edge of the water. But the lake temperature was so cold at this time of year, the girls had decided not to swim.

Nancy eased up beside him, glancing at the girls. “You don’t regret that we haven’t uh…?”

“Well, I won’t lie,” he answered, giving her a heated stare. Her body was toned and fit, and pretty much perfect, he couldn’t help thinking, and she seemed to be looking at him exactly like he was looking at her. “I’ve thought about it…lots.”

“So have I,” she muttered.

John smiled wryly. “What are we going to do?”

At that moment the girls came running towards them, obviously ready to leave the beach for ice cream.

“Let’s both think about how to handle the future, and we can decide one way or another about what we want to do after graduation?”

“Graduation night?” John nodded his agreement firmly. “It’s a date.”

Nancy heaved a sigh.

And then the girls jumped onto her lap.

Immediately, Nancy began tickling, and the girls erupted into fits of giggles.

They’d fallen in love with Nancy, just like John had. At eighteen years old, how did he recognize it was love? All he knew was he’d never been so sure of anything in his life.
